First Corinthians and Magdalene however, seem to have poignant yet unanalyzed names. First Corinthians, which Wikipedia informs me is a section of the New Testament that states the moral superiority of unmarried Christians, spends the novel as an extra character before she finally accepts her not so glamorous life.
Similarly, Magdalene bears the name of Mary Magdalene. The name Milkman Dead is very interesting to me. He was given the nickname Milkman because he breast feed far past the point when children normally stop but I believe it is also a commentary on his character. Milkman is very inconsiderate and simply juvenile when we first meet him.
Thus he not only breast feed far past the point where he should have stopped but he also did not grow as an adult the way he should have because he stayed in that juvenile state.
Therefore the nickname Milkman is more than just a commentary on his past but a commentary on his lack of personal growth as a person. It is this reason why the main stage for the book is Milkman seeking to find his ancestral roots. This is where I believe the last name of Dead comes in. Because of the dark history of enslavement and death that haunts the past of the Dead family I believe Morrison chose such a morbid name to encapsulate the family.
In particular, when looking at Milkman the last name Dead could be referring to how he feels dead inside which is why he ostracizes himself for his family and community. This is also why Milkman goes searching for his historical roots. The vibrant life he is missing is his life is what he is seeking by looking into his family roots and what he finds in the end of the play.
This is also ironic however because he is dead inside until he starts growing as a person past his juvenile nature and finds his reason for being, but it is also his becoming a lively person inside that seals his fate of physical death. Death is literally his legacy. Another interesting name I want to analyze is First Corinthians. Surely this is not a normal name at all because of the number that comes at the start of the name, and I know it was randomly chosen from the bible but I believe there is more meaning to the name that meets the eye.
From my biblical knowledge I know Corinth was a city that 1 Corinthians was written too and at the time the Corinthians were struggling. The Corinthians were worldly people caught up in the world, sexual impurity, two reasons why Paul wrote the letter.
Both of these points are commentaries on First Corinthians. First Corinthians Dead was a worldly well educated girl who has a love affair.
She embodies two of the huge reasons why 1 Corinthians was written. Lastly I wanted to analyze Pilate Dead. She is a very interesting character because of her loving and guiding nature.
