The new Touareg marks a milestone in the brand's largest model and technology campaign, and it shows what engineers and designers at Volkswagen can do. The new flagship takes a top position in the premium class SUV segment with its expressive design, its innovative operating, convenience and safety systems, as well as in the high quality of its materials and craftsmanship. After the successful market launch of the Atlas on the American market, Volkswagen is extending its model range with another SUV.
Already offering a preview of the new model is a near-production concept car that will be presented at the New York International Auto Show next week. Like the seven-seat Atlas, this new five-seat version will also be produced at Volkswagen's plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and it was specially designed and developed for the American market. The countdown has begun for a breakthrough in electric mobility, and could represent the turning point.
That is because the Volkswagen brand is accelerating into this new era by developing a new generation of innovative electric vehicles — the ID. Four-wheel-drive 4MOTION models send power from the engine to a differential in the centre, which then distributes it out to the wheels.
There are different types in different cars. For off-roading, the Volkswagen Touareg instead uses a Torsen mechanical differential, which is more suited to improving traction off-road, although the most adept model is the Volkswagen Amarok truck, which has a more old-fashioned type of locking differential.
For a start, they tend to be more expensive to buy than their two-wheel-drive stablemates.
